The series, Blood Moon, began in May 2022 as a response to recent events in Uvalde, Texas and with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Young uses gouache, ink and salt to create delicately edged compositions reminiscent of moons but filled with swirling colors dissolving into black inks and starburst shocks of salt crystals. These images remind us of our physical connection to the moon and its cycles. All proceeds were donated to Sandyhook Promise and Planned Parenthood.

The series, Mirror, Mirror, began in 2019 as a material exploration using the motif of the hand mirror. The hand mirror motif is used throughout Young’s body of work as a conceptual link to the optical composition device, the “Claude Glass”, used by the Hudson River School. In the Mirror, Mirror series, Young uses gouache, ink and salt to create delicately edged compositions reminiscent of hand mirrors and picture frames with swirling colors dissolving into black inks and starburst shocks of salt crystals. Young’s titles elicit ocean dramas and climate crisis, aging technology and our incessant drive for energy and resources.
